The short version: we only collect what we need to value and buy your car, we use it to contact you about that, and we never sell your details.
Who we are
We Buying Cars ("we", "us", "our") is an independent Australian car buyer. This policy explains how we handle personal information collected through this website and when you deal with us about selling your vehicle. We aim to handle your information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
What we collect
When you ask for an offer, we collect the information you choose to give us, which may include:
- your name, mobile number, email address and postcode
- your preferred contact method and when you want to sell
- details about your vehicle, such as year, model, series, kilometres, colour, registration, condition, service and accident history, modifications and whether money is owing on it
- photos of your vehicle you upload
- any price you have in mind and anything else you tell us
We also collect basic technical information when you visit the site, such as the page you came from, the ad that brought you here, the date and time, your device and browser type and your approximate location based on your IP address. We use this to see how the site is used and which ads work.
If we go ahead with buying your car, we will also collect the information needed to complete the sale, such as proof of identity, ownership and registration details, finance payout details and the bank account we pay you into.
Why we collect it
- to assess your vehicle and make you an offer
- to contact you about your enquiry by your preferred method (call, SMS, WhatsApp or email)
- to arrange inspection, payment, finance payout and collection if you accept
- to meet our legal obligations, including record keeping and vehicle checks
- to improve our website and measure our advertising
You don't have to give us all of this information, but if you don't, we may not be able to give you an accurate offer or buy your car.
Who we share it with
We never sell your personal information. We only share it where needed to do the job, for example with:
- service providers that help us run our website, email and records
- advertising and analytics providers, in limited form, to measure and improve our ads
- your finance company, to get a payout figure and clear any money owing (only if you sell to us)
- transport companies, to collect your car (only if you sell to us)
- government agencies or others where the law requires or allows it
Some of these providers may store data outside Australia. We take reasonable steps to make sure they handle your information securely.
How we keep it safe
Your information is stored in secure, password-protected systems with access limited to the people who need it. We keep it only for as long as we need it for the purposes above, or as long as the law requires, and then delete or de-identify it.
Contacting you
By sending us an enquiry you agree to us contacting you about selling your vehicle. If we ever send you marketing messages, each one will tell you how to opt out, and we will stop when you ask.
Cookies and tracking
Our site may use cookies and similar technologies to understand how visitors use the site and to measure our ads. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The site will still work, but some measurement won't.
Accessing or correcting your information
You can ask to see the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it where we're not required to keep it. Just reply to any email or message we've sent you, or send a request through the form on our website saying what you need. We'll respond within a reasonable time, usually within 30 days.

If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, please get in touch and we'll do our best to fix it.
